What is defensive driving?

On Behalf of Pheffer Law | Feb 17, 2019 | Auto Accidents

Los Angeles can be a challenging city to drive in even for residents. That’s why all motorists must take every precaution while driving, from following traffic rules to limiting distractions in their vehicle. Motorists are also encouraged to adopt defensive driving behaviors, as explained by Esurance.

Be calm behind the wheel

If you’re prone to anger behind the wheel, now is a good time to break this bad habit. Road rage endangers the lives of everyone who share the road, including innocent bystanders. Don’t immediately attribute malice to a driver who makes a mistake and don’t attempt to pursue a driver after an indiscretion. Instead, give others the benefit of the doubt and maintain a calm and reasonable attitude at all times.

Remain aware of your surroundings

It’s easy to let your mind drift while driving. A moment of distraction can lead to a devastating accident, so you must remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Scan the road to the front and sides of your vehicle, while also taking a moment to check your blind spots. This is especially important when driving on the highway.

Eliminate distractions

Most people are well aware of the dangers of texting and driving. However, there are a lot of other distractions that can pull your focus from the road. For instance, something as innocent as changing the station on the radio can lead to a serious injury if you’re not careful. Make sure you set your GPS and radio before heading out. Also, store your phone in a safe location where it can’t be easily accessed while driving to prevent temptation.
