Important tips after a vehicle crash

On Behalf of | May 12, 2018 | Auto Accidents

California residents know that there is always the chance of being involved in a motor vehicle accident when they get into their cars. Fortunately many such accidents are minor but that does not mean that people should avoid taking certain steps after they happen. It is always important for motorists to protect themselves at every step of the way.

As NerdWallet explains, the first priority in any accident should always be the health and safety of the people involved. Identifying potential injuries and calling for emergency help should come before everything else. A person who appears to be seriously injured should not be moved until help arrives.

Allstate recommends calling the police to get a report filed regardless of how minor the accident may seem. Doing this provides drivers with documentation that may be very important later on. When it comes to documentation, there may be no such thing as too much information. Drivers can use their phones to take pictures of things like the vehicle license plate, the driver’s license of the other motorist, the accident location and even vehicle conditions.

All contact information including cell phone, email address and mailing address for drivers and passengers should be collected as well as auto insurance policy details including the policy number. Again, a cell phone can be used to snap a photo of an insurance card. Perhaps one of the biggest golden rules is for drivers to not talk about who is responsible for the accident at the scene of the crash.
